Primi Open Mic kicks off with a bang!

Jozi’s search for the ultimate artist kicked off this Summer and it all went down at Primi Piatti Design Quarter last week as Jozi’s best battled it out at Round One of the ‪#‎PrimiOpenMic‬ competition search. The competition, hosted by  Primi Piatti is the brands first-ever music platform supported by local music industry advisors, and we teamed up to lookout for the city’s finest singers, rappers, songwriters and vocalists.

The competition rolls out with three Open Mic Nights, with the top three finalists from each night  moving onto the finale going down on Saturday, 27 November. Round one got off to a great start this past Saturday as contestants across all genre’s of music joined in. Music advisors included PR specialist and founder of Entourage Media, Publicity and Communications, Gilda Narsimdas; Entertainment writer and music fundi El Broide; and Media Privé’s Account Manager Namhla Mputamputa.  The three shared their musical insight and encouraged entries to give it their all!

Our host for the night was SA’s very own Seacrest, Jason Von Berg! From being a digital content producer, an entertainment and lifestyle writer, a radio host to a host on The Buzz on CliffCentral, Jason was ultimate host who helped the contestants ease their nerves.

After a quick round of soothing teas (and some cocktails) the contestants were ready to go. Kicking off the nights performances was Mandla Nkomo who rendered his version of Ronan Keating’s -If tomorrow never comes. This was the first time Mandla has ever sang infront of a liveaudience and his first attempt was greatly appreciated.

Next up was Victor Sakutukwa who blew us away with his vocal take on Nick Joans’s -Jealous. With a friend on keyboard Victor delivered a solid performance and unfortunately did not make the top three but was invited back by all three judges to compete at the next open mic night going down this October!

Music teacher and piano fundi Christelle de Jager opted for an upbeat song choice and got the crowd singing along to Bennie and the Jets. Despite her nerves getting the better of her, Christelle pulled through and received a great response from the crowd.

The audience was not prepared for Abdul Ismail’s take on James Brown- Its a man’s world, and has some on their feet clapping along with great applause.

Priyanka Pather and her entourage did not disappoint. Avid singer and performer Priyanka, clinched her spot in the top three with the song of the year from the Twilight series, Christina Perri’s- A thousand years. She was ecstatic and thrilled that she also was getting the chance to meet her idol Christina on a trio overseas soon. We know for sure that when she returns to the finals, she is going to nail her performance indeed! Go Team Priyanka!

Christopher Augustine clinched the second spot with John Legend -All of Me! Serenading the ladies definitely worked and he received high praise from all three judges. We cant wait to see what he has in store for us at the finals, and we’re pretty sure the ladies cant wait either! Go team Christopher!

Sango Velaphi followed suit and tried his own lyrical version to rap that had us bumpin. Disebo Elle managed to settle her nerves as she delivered a great performance as well.

Last but definitely not least was Kay Ntombela, who had heard about the competition via social media and decided to pop by and enter, and boy did that pay off, Kay brought the house down with his own song that he has written and recorded, entitled Girls, and I am sure that tune is still playing in everyone mind.
